Foundation History

Former Clovis Unified Superintendent Dr. Floyd B. undefinedDocundefined Buchanan

In 1986, then- Clovis Unified Superintendent Dr. Floyd B. “Doc” Buchanan had the vision of a foundation for public schools that would help ensure kids always had the resources needed to excel.  The foundation would fill the funding gaps when state and federal dollars weren’t available.

A volunteer Board of Directors was recruited and this group took on the challenge of mobilizing community support and soliciting the first donors to the Foundation.  Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over $7 million to support much needed educational programs and scholarships at every school in the District.

The Need
Statewide, Clovis Unified receives less than other unified school districts.  Today, Clovis Unified still receives less state money per child than many other school districts in California.  If Clovis Unified received just the average per pupil funding of other Fresno County districts it would have an additional $120 million annually to run its schools.  This gap in funding forces Clovis Unified classrooms to do without some of the innovative resources and tools available in other districts.

On a daily basis Clovis Unified must do more with less.  Thanks to the support of our community, and an administration and Governing Board that know how to make the most of every dollar, Clovis Unified is still able to provide high quality learning tools and facilities for students but needs our help.

One of the greatest challenges facing Clovis Unified is overcoming the perception that it has ample resources to meet the needs of ALL students.  The community supports education and has passed bond measures to ensure that Clovis Unified students learn in world-class performing arts, educational and athletic facilities.  However, these bond measures must be used only for building and renovations and cannot be used for operating expenses.

Community donations are an integral part of the financial resources the Foundation for Clovis Schools provides annually for students and teachers in Clovis Unified through New Teacher Grants, Classroom and School Grants and the Students of Promise scholarship program.

Your tax-deductible gift is an investment in the lives of students we teach, and the teachers and staff whose talents and energy lay the foundation for a quality education in Clovis Unified.

Whether $50, $500 or $5,000, your donation is added to other donations that have helped the Foundation award more than $5 million to students, teachers and classroom programs since 1986.  The Foundation has benefited every school in Clovis Unified.
